Duxford IWM has got it all. An hour and a quarter’s drive from London, 20 minutes from the heart of Cambridge, just off the M11, Duxford Imperial War Museum has something to offer everyone. As well as loads of aircraft, some of which are working and can be seen taking off and landing, it’s got conference rooms, air shows and a whole hangar dedicated to land vehicles. For a photographer, that means opportunities galore. And for children, it’s an ideal opportunity for a day out. Yes, it costs to get in, unlike RAF Hendon, but you’ll see a lot more variety – including Concorde!
Being a large museum, spread over several buildings, there are also several cafés, and more than one gift shop. So while you might get tired, there’s always somewhere close by to eat.
For conferences, events, and parties, we’re looking at between 300 and 700 people. I’ve not photographed any events there to date, but if you’re looking for a venue that size, I’m sure you won’t be disappointed. I could imagine it being ideal for a plane enthusiast’s wedding!
Incidentally, you may notice that the hangers are fairly evenly spaced except for a gap. Film enthusiasts and little boys take note – a bit of history – during the filming of the Battle Of Britain, they actually blew up a hanger just for the film! You’d have thought they would have rebuilt it by now…
So there you have it, Duxford IWM in a nutshell. A great opportunity to learn about all sorts of things relating to our military history – or just to have fun.
